The Role of the Pedestrian Bridge in Enhancing Downtown Sussex

On March 22nd, 2024, the Town of Sussex placed a 2024 set of Canadian coins under the bearing plate of the structural abutment and Major Thorne offered the dedication quoted above.
While the official dedication ceremony will be held at a later date, your DBA is celebrating this historical installation for the Town but especially for your downtown. The project, which took nearly a decade to come to fruition, was encouraged and supported by the Sussex Downtown Business Association to address the challenges of accessing the downtown area, especially when traffic congestion was at its peak during major events.
Enhancing Access During Events
Improved Foot Traffic Flow:
The pedestrian bridge offers a direct and scenic route over Trout Creek, effectively linking event-hosting areas and parking lots with the heart of downtown. This convenience has greatly improved pedestrian access, making it more appealing for people to walk to downtown businesses and event venues.

Large events like the Sussex Balloon Fiesta and the annual flea market often result in significant traffic congestion. The pedestrian bridge mitigates this issue by providing a safe and efficient alternative for foot traffic, which helps to reduce the number of vehicles on the road.
